Of roles & No-fuss Apple-Oats Rock Cakes

Lady 1 – “His Mom was saying that he plays a lot with girls so he loves making castles in the sand pit and doesn’t enjoy playing with anything else”

Lady 2 – “Oh yes that’s very likely”

Both of them are talking about a third person’s child and what his mother shared with them.

 

42709556_10156028090446448_6301803624188084224_nAnd here I am wondering why this could not have been said without the derivation that BECAUSE he plays a lot with girls he loves making castles. And I am wondering if I had actually heard this being discussed as we stood around in a group watching kids play.

I am sure she didn’t intend to belittle what the child was doing. But imagine the extent of our unconscious bias. The power of it that that we create gender stereotypes in every small moment. And then when one person shared it, two others discussed it, it got further propagated.

With each such comment , however unintentionally uttered we are taking giant steps backward. And the worry is that we are unaware of that.

 

On that note, let me share a recipe that my son helped me put together and it turned out so well ! You could begin your day with these super awesome Apple and Oats Rock Cakes!

Did I just say begin your day with cake ? 🙂

Yes. These no-fuss , delicious and lightly sweetened rock cakes ( called so not because of texture but because of their appearance ) are perfect with your morning Chai.

They do not contain any baking powder or soda, and are free of refined white flour or white sugar.

And easy to make as a lovely snacking or even a breakfast option which is different and a small treat for your little one !

Recipe –

225 gms – Wholewheat flour

100 gms cold unsalted butter

55 gms raw unrefined sugar

2 apples grated

1 tsp ground cinnamon

75 gms oats ( rolled or instant)

1 egg , beaten well

4-5 tbsp milk

Method –

Put the ww flour and butter in a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour until it looks like bread crumbs. Add the sugar, cinnamon, apples and oats. Mix well with a spatula. Add the egg and milk to bind it together.

Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees C. Drop spoonfuls of the batter onto a prepared baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake at the same temperature for 20-25 minutes until it browns up and is firm on the outside.

Allow it to cool off. You can eat it as is or warm it up before eating too.
