Chemicals or Calories & a bit about Natural Sweeteners

On 5th August, Sunday, I did a knowledge sharing session at the Small Bites Children Dental Clinic  The session covered aspects of how to explore the route to using natural and healthy forms of sweeteners. The focus when we speak about healthy eating in present times should link up to counting the Chemicals, not the Calories….

Taking your kids along & Oats-Buckwheat Granola Bars !

About 10 days ago I had the community meetup for Ovenderful Mom Bakers Community which is a 23,000 member healthy baking community that I started in November 2014. As with most events, I almost always take my little ones along. My son has been at many events, presentations, client meetings with me. And now so…

The Caramel Cake with bold flavours of 3 natural sweeteners !

Just like you have Triple chocolate cakes or brownies or cookies, is there a way to have different natural sweeteners in one single cake? Tempted to pick a chocolate cake for this experiment just so that the chocolate masks the flavour if something was to go wrong? I was tempted to do that too. But I ended up doing the reverse – I picked a cake where the natural sweeteners will shine like the heroes of the bake and there will be no way to hide their actual taste. If anything, the flavours will be more pronounced and lingering. Why…

Healthy Sweeteners for Baking

Its time for the festivities to set in as they already have in all parts of the country – and as we all know, this is truly the best time of the year. 2006 – Exactly 10 years ago I visited Sri Lanka, Colombo and then Beruwala. Long before Peter Kuruvita made it a ‘fashionable’ destination to visit, through his culinary series on TLC. Shattering of pre-conceived notions- that is how I would define my visit to Sri Lanka. You go into it thinking of it as a poor cousin, one of the low profile countries in South Asia without the staggering growth rate of India. You go into it knowing that you will be the “foreign” tourist there and expecting attention. But let me tell you that, if you go in with the…

Is Baking a science or an art?

Most people will tell you that baking is a science mainly because it is driven by proportions, measures, time specifications. But a few will tell you that it is part-science, part-art. Science when it comes to proportions of ingredients, art when it is about what the ingredients should be ! Science when it comes to following a recipe, art when it comes to creating one from scratch. There will always be those moments when the artist within you plays a bigger role or the scientist trumps the artist’s thought process. That is what makes baking fun and fulfilling for me….
